What’s Alt Balaji’s ‘It Happened In Calcutta’ all about?

By Aryeman

The story revolves around Kusum, a young girl who aspires to become the first female doctor in the city and gets an admission in the Calcutta Medical College to fulfil her dreams. In college she comes across a privileged, arrogant and devastatingly handsome boy named Ronobir and falls in love with him. But there is more to this tale than what meets the eye.

Things take a turn for the worst as all she gets in return is heartbreak and betrayal, leading to a separation that makes her lose faith in Ronobir & love. While they mature over time, it’s their love that takes a beating leading to moments where they just don’t want to be with each other. The web-series invokes a sense of nostalgia for the love-story set in the period of the 1960s and 70s when the country was dealing with political unrest, the Indo-Pak war (1971) and cholera outbreak. Constantly crossing paths, the chemistry between Kusum and Ronobir, that starts right from the time they meet in college, is filled with ups and downs.

The 9 episodes of this romance drama spanning across the 1960-1970s India will beautifully showcase the retro India in the costumes, set-up and the locations against the backdrop of Calcutta and also one can hear the beautiful melodies like ‘The ‘Ekla Chalo Re’, ‘Subah ki Garmi’, and Sukoon which have been created keeping the theme of the show in mind. These beautiful tracks perfectly captures how the lead couple yearn for each other and express their feelings. Apart from the love saga, the series will also touch upon the pertinent events of the time – cholera epidemic and World War.
